Zugarrimurdi: Cave Party to Celebrate Solstice, Burning Witches

On June 20th, a bunch of Basques head down to the local fucking-nuts cave and celebrate the summer solstice by burning stuff and dancing. Oh, and this isn't just any fucking-nuts ass cave- nooo, this here is a witch burnin' cave. "Pagan rituals" (aka hanging out in a cave) have been carried out in this space for hundreds of years. And the Spanish Inquisition was never very crazy about pagans or their rituals. Check what they did:

In 1611, Alonso de Salazar Frias, began to hunt down “witches” and heretics in the countryside near the vicinity of Zugarramurdi and was given special instructions to the cave, as it was popularly believed to be the meeting place of the witches. During this horrific campaign, 2000 people confessed under torture, of those over 1,300 were children aged seven to fourteen.

All too often, celebrations are held in memory of something delightful- the birth of a savior or that same savior coming back from the dead (creepy but still delightful). It's refreshing to party to remember a simpler time when annoying kids could be called witches and killed in a cavern.

In an seriousness, really wish I was there.

Dance Until They Turn the Lights On. Or Off...

This is pretty nuts. They are creating dance floors that use the energy exerted from dancing to power the club. Better hope you don't a shitty dj...

Turns out there's a club like this in San Francisco called Temple and the new club is marked to be in Berlin. I might have to go check it out when I've got my dancing shoes on.

I'm a pretty big dancer as any of my friends/enemies/random unfortunate female behind will tell you and this has me thinking; what if my dance moves could power other things and save me money. I'll get down to watch Cops and I'd boogie to Google. Hell, I'd break it down in the bathroom to power the overhead light, although I'm not sure how sanitary that would prove to be.

Check the article out here.

Backwards Comic #1

Could this idea be utilized by one of our clients? HP? Sprint? Perhaps If Sprint ever came out and said "we're sorry" for customer service, they could do it in this style, kind of peeling off the old layers, starting fresh. Seems like a light hearted humorous way to get a message across.

This is the luckiest man alive...

Where the Hell is Matt? (2008) from Matthew Harding on Vimeo.

Bescumber- To Spray Poo

I had a pretty extensive conversation about Blumpkins the other week. The diaolgue stretched over a whole three days, being pretty much the central and sole portion of most talks. By the time it was all over, there was a Blumpkin Inc. line of T-Shirt ready to be pressed, all future blumpkin advancements/technology had been concepted and my cohorts and I (Ethan and Dan) almost secured a blumpkin from the unassuming Jackie.

That weekends conversation left me totally spent but hungry for more fecal phonetics. As fate would have it- and fate is a conniving sexy beast- I just came across this article. It teaches you a bunch of english words you should know in order to sounds like a stuffy asshole at your next wine and cheese party but ALSO explores a bunch of words that essentially mean, "to spray poo". As this is half the blumpkin battle, it's pretty pretinent to my own endevours, but I'm sure you'll love "sharnying" your friends. Watch for the new Blumpkin Inc. line coming out Fall 2008. Get it, fall, like shit falls out of your...oh enough already!

The Notwists: Where in the World

Glad to see they're back on the scene, here's the first single

Girl Talk: Feed the Animals

Ms. Laura Barton sent me the link to download the new Girl Talk album yesterday (and yes, I'll share the damn link. Try to pay...unlike me, Girl Talk "FEED THE ANIMALS")

The verdict? Kick ass, as one would expect from a Girl Talk Mash Up Masterpiece. But until Night Ripper and other previous releases, the listenability of this album seems to be a bit higher. Maybe it's the flow, maybe it doesn't trip over itself in areas where his younger attempts did. In any case, Girl Talk firmly plants himself atop the thrown of top Masher. I can't wait to catch a show!

Check out what another person thinks of the album who obviously has more time and presumably more of an opinion here.

Also give a look at the wiki page to see all the samples used in every song

edit: Just read GT's Pitchfork interview where he says he doesn't consider himself a mash up artist (he actually claims to not enjoy mash-ups). His point is that most mash ups take two (perhaps three) songs and plunk them together, where as he is creating organically new tracks. While I can see this argument, is his music not just that same specimen, just hyper-evolved? I liken it to biology: mass mash ups are Amoeba's where his are 20 headed hydras.

Dip in the Polls - Tide MyTalkingStain Contest

Hmmm, that onion stains voice is so...sexy, makes me want to slap my mama.

Commercial made with some fellow GSPer's for a contest. We didn't win but I proved to the world that I could do a great stereotypical french accent. And that's all that matters in life. and death.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

My favorite movie of all time has found it's way to Hulu.com and can be watched for free anytime. This film truly holds a special place in my heart as I saw it in such rare circumstances- on crisp Boston night with an gal as intriguing as Clementine herself.

Justin Timberlake - Lovestoned (DJ Tiƫsto Remix) (Legendado)

I got razzed today for knowing a Justin Timberlake song. Alright, I knew every single fucking song and could successfully scat my way through each chorus. What can I say, the guys got some serious chops and the ladies love him. Why not support him? Anyway, I dig this video for the swank blue light video that is scattered throughout. Enjoy.

Listen Up, Can You hear the Stars?

This evening has led me meandering through the interwebs, bouncing from one blog to the next, trolling through a wealth of new indie garble that I don't possibly have enough time to process. It is flabergasting how much one can learn given the time and pointer finger to scroll. And it's funny how far out you can get, listening to the most mind numbing knob tweadling that sends you darting for the nearest easy listening streaming radio.
This evenings soundscape scavenger hunt began with some casual viewing of the Sigur Ros DVD, Heima. I picked it up at the end of last week after feeling my spirit animal wince at it's continued claustrophobia, realizing that I haven't ventured to anything resembling the true outdoors in...god, I don't even fucking remember. I longed for the vast rolling nothingness that I'm sure the movie was sure to capture in the landscapes of Iceland. Popped it in and I was off. It was exactly what I was expecting and as I had great expectations, it did not disappoint. The music- as harrowing and heartbreaking as always- and the North Atlantic landmass vibrated with an untouched virginity.
With my head already enveloped in a musical disposition, I wrangled myself into one website that invariably led me to a myriad of other sites, all uniquely exciting in their uncovering. I felt like an 8 year at a birthday party held at one of those places where they hide precious (but not that precious) rocks in some sand and you sift them out and keep them. Every time I came across a new page I hadn't seen or even heard of, only to find a thriving community, I was elated but left thinking, "where the hell have I been"? Perhaps my surprise is a sign to stop spending most internet time masturbating. Doubtful.
In any event, I came across a number of sites that I'd like to visit again. So as a log to myself and any unfortunate soul who might read this blog mistaking it for a music pedophiles' page, I will list those websites:

NPR Music (actually houses some contemporary music, NPR ceases to impress): Check it out here

last.fm. I've known about this site for a while but have always poopooed it, opting rather to spend my time scrolling through the myspace-esque pages of imeem

But I've found that last.fm has it's perks- like pre-release whole albums! Listen to the whole new Sigur Ros album, meư suư ƭ eyrum viư spilum endalaust here:
last.fm free Sigur Ros

The Daily Swarm
Great music playlists (check out the Van She song, "Strangers") and articles, both music based and media focused (check the great article about the new Myspace facelift due June 16th).

Pitchfork Media An old go to when I'm feeling abnormally pretentious, but very rarely do I visit and not learn something new.

NME.com Juries still out on this one, didn't really dive into this site, but it looks like it might be pretty rounded.

Myspace.com. Joke ROFL LOL JESUS FUCKING CHRIST SUPERLOL

Vimeo.com I know this site was created by the crew and by association I should love it. But I've always shied away from it going mainstream with Youtube. But I gotta say, I like the little community they got going, I thinks it's definitely worth while exploring this site more.

Muxtape this shit is cool. It's essentially like any other music site that allows you to make and save your playlists, but something about the simplicity (read: sloppy sheik) of this design is endearing and intriguing. And the music housed therein seems to be more personalized- can you upload your own tracks? One reason to return for more answers...

At the end of this hodgepodge hike, I happened across and decided to end my day with Stars on last.fm. The Stars have a quality in their songs that i can't put my finger on. I'd say it brings back nostalgia of listening to them in my car in high school, except I didn't listen to them in high school. Maybe that's the quality- it sounds like something you heard when shit used to mean something. When a moment used to hover and you'd hold your breathe, trying to stay in that moment as long as you could; soak in the sadness or breathe in the happiness. In any event, that's Stars. I first heard them drinking one of my first legal beers at Bukowski's in Boston. Over a Sam Adams and a $2 burger, I heard the "Set Yourself on Fire" album and was immediately hooked. And I'm so glad I was, they continue to bring me back to a time that never happened and let me enjoy all those feelings I could have felt all over again.

So with no further adieu, here is a link to some newer (I think) versions of their classics:

Life is a Beach: San Francisco in June

With the help of my beloved family (and their birthday checks) I was able to purchase myself a long overdue Digital EOS Canon XSi (check the specs here). The thing is a gorgeous beast and my 9th grade photo class knowledge of f-stops and aperture are proving rusty. While I am no Ansel Adams (yet), I thought it proper to take some pictures of my neighborhood on a particularly sunny day. So here's a slice of my life: North Beach, San Francisco. It's unique, it's diverse, it's home.

Cops!

Wanted to see how a hulu video on this blog. And I love Cops. I mean a serious, borderline obsession with Cops. Just listen to this description:

In Portland, OR, officers pull over a suspicious vehicle only to discover a trio of men and "a 7-year supply" of ecstasy.

Lykke Li - Little Bit

Thanks to Swedish Elisabeth for this one. A devilishly catchy song from Norse Country.

Antoine Dufour - Into Your Heart - www.candyrat.com

From the youtubers that brought us Andy McKee, here's some more great guitar mastery

New BMW: Made of Cloth

I really don't know how feasible this car or this idea could ever be, but the new concept GINA Light Visionary Model is damn sexy. Made with a Lycra hybrid cloth, the car has no rigid shell, allowing it to shape shift underneath the mailable material (think that move with the ghosts whose faces push against bed sheets, but replace scary ghosts with sexy German engineering). Take a gander at the Wired article here:

And to get the full experience (and perhaps a bit of a chubby), watch the video.

Girl Talk - Bounce That (Best Fan Video Ever)

nuff said.

Sigur Ros- Gobbledigook

The new video for the great new Sigur Ros tune. If this song is any indication of the upcoming album, these guys are taking their sound in an entirely new direction. I for one am excited to brave the new trail.
Sigur Ros have an uncanny ability to capture intense emotions and bottle them in blasts of sound that don't even need words. That may be their biggest selling point for me- the fact that most of what they sing is indeed "gobbledigook" only helps to reinforce my opinions on what is the best mechanism for a message. I have long been a fan of commercials and short films that are short on copy and big on music. It's like words are giving you a finite playing field to search for the meaning while music opens up the flood gates and let you interpret any way you wish. In a nut shell, that's what Sigur Ros is to me, a limitless flow of interpretive opportunity. And with that, the video:

Is it just me or did this sogn come out of nowhere and blow up like crazy? In whatever case, this song is a natural booty mover and I approve.
