Zugarrimurdi: Cave Party to Celebrate Solstice, Burning Witches

On June 20th, a bunch of Basques head down to the local fucking-nuts cave and celebrate the summer solstice by burning stuff and dancing. Oh, and this isn't just any fucking-nuts ass cave- nooo, this here is a witch burnin' cave. "Pagan rituals" (aka hanging out in a cave) have been carried out in this space for hundreds of years. And the Spanish Inquisition was never very crazy about pagans or their rituals. Check what they did:

In 1611, Alonso de Salazar Frias, began to hunt down “witches” and heretics in the countryside near the vicinity of Zugarramurdi and was given special instructions to the cave, as it was popularly believed to be the meeting place of the witches. During this horrific campaign, 2000 people confessed under torture, of those over 1,300 were children aged seven to fourteen.

All too often, celebrations are held in memory of something delightful- the birth of a savior or that same savior coming back from the dead (creepy but still delightful). It's refreshing to party to remember a simpler time when annoying kids could be called witches and killed in a cavern.

In an seriousness, really wish I was there.
